The U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Women’s Mining Coalition announced today the signing of a formal alliance agreement designed to foster safer, more healthful working conditions for miners nationwide.
Through this collaborative relationship, MSHA and WMC will work together to provide mining industry personnel with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will protect the health and safety of miners. The organizations will work together on initiatives to meet education and training goals designed to improve workers’ health and safety, including:
- Providing technical assistance to the mining industry to comply with the Mine Act.
- Providing information, education and training, and technical assistance to prevent injuries and illnesses.
- Sharing best practices and effective approaches to improve mine safety and health.
- Disseminating information on mine safety and health at conferences, events, or through print and electronic media, including links from MSHA’s and WMC’s websites.
- Speaking, exhibiting, or participating at workshops, conferences, and other stakeholder meetings to proactively address mine safety and health issues.
“Establishing this alliance with the Women’s Mining Coalition strengthens our shared commitment to ensuring every miner returns home safe and healthy at the end of each shift,” said Assistant Secretary for Mine Safety and Health Wayne Palmer. “By working together, we can expand access to vital training, share effective safety practices, and empower miners with the knowledge they need to protect themselves and one another. This partnership reflects MSHA’s dedication to collaboration and to fostering a culture of safety across the mining industry.”
Lindsey Wright, executive director of the Women’s Mining Coalition, added about the alliance agreement: “The Women’s Mining Coalition is proud to enter into this Alliance Agreement with the Mine Safety and Health Administration and strengthen our shared commitment to advancing miner health and safety across the industry. We value MSHA’s leadership and look forward to continuing a collaborative relationship focused on education, communication, and promoting a strong culture of safety throughout the mining sector,” said Lindsey Wright, WMC Executive Director.
MSHA’s Alliance Program helps the agency build cooperative relationships with organizations committed to workplace safety and health. Alliance partners work with MSHA to provide miners and mine operators with information, guidance, and resources to build a culture of safety. Alliances also ensure that mine operators fully understand their responsibilities under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977.
